For thousands of years, the milpa, a traditional Mexican way of growing corn, beans, and many other crops and associated wild species, continues to feed those who cultivate it. However, in the Sierra Madre de Chiapas, Mexico, the milpa is at risk. This documentary is a result of a participatory action research process founded by the Organic Farming Research Foundation and carried out by Universidad Veracruzana and the Institute for Agroecology at the University of Vermont, and tells in the voice of farmers how dependence on agrochemicals, soil impoverishment, loss of native seeds, and the prioritization of coffee, among other causes, are jeopardizing the continuity of this traditional crop. The possibility of continuity of the milpa, fundamental to achieving their own food sovereignty, lies in the farmer families. This rescue requires a daily and long-term effort to preserve the heritage of their ancestors for new generations.
