The plot is set in a German city at the end of the 21st century. In the past decades, animal welfare laws have been comprehensively reformed, resulting in legal equality between humans and animals. Society has since adopted a vegan diet and abandoned slaughterhouses serve as reminders of past atrocities. Crimes against animals are now severely punished like crimes against human life.
Sophie Schmidt, a thirty-five-year-old lawyer, has been actively involved in an animal welfare party for many years, advocating for this paradigm shift as she abhors the structural exploitation of animals in agriculture. She holds a high position within the party and is seen as a potential candidate for party leadership.
Her partner, Karl Fischer, takes an opposing stance, which leads to regular conflicts in their relationship. Prior to the animal rights reform, Karl worked as a butcher. However, he struggles to find his place in the new system and feels alienated.
When Sophie, under the influence of alcohol, accidentally hits an animal with her car, her unwavering principles are shaken to the core. She is confronted with the weight of her belief in equality between humans and animals. She must decide how to navigate this dilemma.
Will she stand up for her ideals or choose a promising career?
